Initially, it is important to remember in the game of gin rummy as to find about the card discarded by the opponent. As, whatever the card you discard may get used by your opponent; hence you should always remain careful about not to throwing a card in which, your opponent may get interested to pick. You should think as how your opponent is playing, what type of card he is picking and discarding and choosing not to pick. The hand of your opponent is able to deduce a lot of information about him and his game.

At the beginning of a gin rummy hand, you should plan to play for knocking instead of going for gin, as it is quite significant to receive bonus for a winning hand. You should develop a hand involving melds, a knock cache and a triangle in a quickly possible manner. You can knock, after hitting one of the four cards when you need to form a meld from a triangle. In the gin rummy game, the strategies indicate the important of middle cards more than that of the low cards or the face cards as these cards can be used in more sets as well as runs. If you think or know that the card you will discard can be of use for your opponent, then you should strictly avoid discarding it.

If you wish to begin with the 10 point cards of four or unmatched criteria in your hand, you should start quickly discard them despite of what the chances of combination are. Keeping early on a high card triangle is good, but you should discard it safely, if it is still remaining empty after 6 or 7 draws. However, you should restrict doing it in every game for making the card discarding less predictable. More often, it depends upon the gaming strategy of the playersthe gaming strategy of the players.
